All CALEE eyewear is made in Sabae City in the Fukui Prefecture. This small town with a population of less than 70,000 people has become Japan’s largest producer of eyeglasses and over the last 100 years has earned its globally recognised title, “City of Glasses”. Eyewear made in Sabae is renowned for its intricate craftsmanship and innovative approach to design.
CALEE eyewear has been made in Sabae for over 10 years, and over this time a special relationship has been created between the brand’s owner and the production factory which has helped them to express CALEE’s vision of timeless products whilst keeping the manufacturing purely in Japan by some of the world’s most skilled artisans.
The formally named ‘Wellington’ type frame draws inspiration from eyewear of the 1960’s. The frame is made from acetate which has been coated and polished to the nth degree resulting in increased heat and shock protection. Seven lobe hinges provide incredibly smooth operation of the arms and the clip-on lenses which are available in either a black or green tint, allow you to craft your own style. If you are undecided, the clip-on lenses are available to purchase individually as well.
